Gambia: Gov’t takes steps to address groundnut marketing problems
By Shout-Africa.com Gambia Correspondent – In a bid to address the perennial problems associated with groundnut marketing in this country, the Government of the Gambia through the Finance ministry in Banjul recently signed an agreement for US$14,000,000 for the purchasing of groundnuts, with the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Mr Mambury Njie, who was accompanied by the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Programs and International Cooperation, Mr Mod K. Ceesay, Tony Carvalho, Managing Director Gambia Groundnut Corporation (GGC) and Mustapha Colley, Deputy Managing Director GGC, signed on behalf of The Gambia while acting Chief Executive Officer, ITFC, Mr Eng. Hani Salem Sonbel signed on behalf of ITFC.
“This agreement, which is structured on a rollover basis, is significant in addressing the perennial problems associated with groundnut marketing in The Gambia,” a press release from the ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has said.
