LIBERIA: WASH Media visits Cape Mount County

As a follow-up to a report released by the British Charity, WaterAid on the Environmental, Social and Health Impact on communities due to activities of mining companies in Cape Mount County, the WASH Media Network visited communities that are mentioned in the report. The visit on the part of the WASH Media was also aimed at verifying the report released by the British charity on the situation faced by the locals due to the mining activities in their respective communities.

As part of its activities under WaterAid Liberia, the United Youth, a local WASH CSO has embarked on series of activities aimed at providing the platform for citizens to have the opportunity to quiz individuals seeking elected positions to inform them what they will do in supporting water, sanitation and hygiene if elected as Representatives. Recently, the WASH CSO held a forum bringing together some of the Representative candidates together in District 14, Montserrado County to inform residents of that District on their platforms for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

One of the leading political parties in Liberia, Liberty Party, has promised to prioritize WASH, especially access to safe water across the country. Liberty Party's Standard Bearer, Charles Brumskine has assured Liberians if elected as President of the Republic of Liberia, citizens will be provided pipe borne water across the country.

LIBERIA: Rural Communities benefit from WASH Training

As part of efforts to ensure that Liberians, especially rural dwellers have access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation and hygiene, a local NGO constructing WASH facilities, has begun WASH training for rural communities. Eleven Communities in Grand Cape Mount county are benefiting from the Initiative through hand pump mechanic and WASH software training. The project is undertaken by the Community Development Services (CODES), with support from WaterAid/Irish Aid WASH project in Cape Mount.
