London, 2 August 2012 – New epidemiological data from two refugee camps in South Sudan show mortality and malnutrition rates soaring above emergency thresholds, announced Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) today. More than 170,000 refugees have made the harrowing journey across the border to escape conflict and food insecurity in Sudan’s Blue Nile and South Kordofan States. Many had to walk for weeks and have arrived in four refugee camps in an extremely weak and vulnerable condition. DAADAB, 31 July 2012 (IRIN) – Large quantities of foodstuffs and other goods were destroyed by a fire on 29 July at the main market in one of the camps making up Dadaab refugee complex in eastern Kenya. “The total extent of the damage from this devastating fire is impossible to assess in detail at this early stage. However we can confirm that 80 percent of the market was destroyed. Kigadi/London, 31 July, 2012: An emergency team from the international medical humanitarian organisation Médecins SansFrontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is in Kigadi, in western Uganda’s Kibaale district, to help fight an outbreak of the Ebola virus. Other MSF teams in Uganda are closely monitoring the situation. The Ebola outbreak, confirmed by Ugandan government on 28 July, has killed at least 14 people, while at least 20 more are thought to be infected.
