Zambia: Lusaka’s Society House in $100 million facelift

By Nawa Mutumweno – Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) will in May this year start re-developing Society House in Lusaka’s central business district at a cost of $100 million. In 1997, fire partially burnt the building, leaving 11 out of the 19 floors affected and since then, ZNBS has been seeking a developer to redesign the building. According to ZNBS senior manager property and estates Logan Nyasulu, works will start on May 1, 2011, once the tenants vacate the premises. Muluzi has since sought a court intervention so that the government’s decision is reviewed. He argues that the government’s decision is unconstitutional adding that it violates his right to medical treatment by a physician of his choice. Malawi: Malawian journalist arrested on mistaken identity

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Police in Malawi have disclosed that a reporter they arrested on allegations of causing breach of peace to a Member of Parliament (MP) family was a case of mistaken identity. The reporter Kandani Ngwira who writes for a newspaper the government tried to ban recently was arrested on Monday and was due to appear in court on Wednesday to be formally cleared of the charge.
