Ghana: GOETHE INSTITUTE @ 50 –improving lives
By Peterking Quaye – In 1961 the Goethe-Institut, the German Cultural Centre of the Federal Republic of Germany with global reach gained its entrance to Ghana. Over the last fifty years we have had the privilege to develop more than a thousand programmes, conferences and projects in music and film, dance and theatre, the visual and media arts, literature and philosophy as well as in the field of language teaching, and library and information services together with our Ghanaian partners.
From the very beginning of our intercultural work in the late fifties, we have based our projects on the concept of dialogue, encompassing contributions, knowledge, and experiences from both of our cultures
in order to make them relevant and meaningful for participants and audiences. As representatives of a cultural institution, we have had the enormous privilege to be inspired by some of the renowned artists, intellectuals and academia from Germany and Ghana and other countries.
In a short conversation with Programs Director of Goethe Institute-Ghana,Ms. Kristy ,she hinted that preparations are on the way for a grand celebration.
Often we were happy enough to provide a platform for their artistic and aesthetic encounters as well as for collaborative projects and networking. The theme of this anniversary is “The Past, Present & Future of Making a Difference” The main objective of the Jubilee Celebration is to reflect on the evolution, development, achievements and perspectives for the future in the next fifty years in the arts.
The Golden Jubilee celebration, beginning in March 2011 and ending in December 2011, will comprise a kaleidoscope of events: launching, panel discussions, exhibitions, fashion show, music concerts, film screenings, commemoration of publications and much more
