Ghana Movie Awards 2011 – is more needed to be done?
By Peterking Quaye – This year’s awards came off at the Accra International conference center, it was attended by some of the crème de la crème of both Ghana and Nigeria movie industries, including Majid Michel, John Dumelo, Nana Ama McBrown, Ama K. Abebrese, Ramsey Nouah, Segun Arinze, Desmond Elliot, Prince David Osei, and Jackie Appiah in attendance. Veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs, who was also in attendance, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The night was however not only for Leila Djansi’s Ties That Bind as Shirley Frimpong-Manson’s 10-chapter series, Adams Apples also went home with a total of five awards, the second highest on the night.
Adams Apple picked up awards for Best Screenplay, Best Story, Best Make-up, Best Music [Original Score], and Best Writing Adapted or Original Screenplay.
Actors, Majid Michel and Kwaku Adu popularly known as Agya Koo, picked up awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (English Language) and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Local Language) respectively.
Interestingly, Majid Michel picked up a second award, Best Actor in a Supporting Role all for his role in the movie Somewhere In Africa. Actress Vivian Jill walked home with the Best Actress in a Leading Role (Local Language) award for her role in the movie, Yaw Donkor. Many critics of the industry despite lauding the efforts of the organizers were of strong view that more needs to be done to see the producers interest to the industry is sustain. Interviews with movie fans also reveal that the organizer need to be time conscious and some of the acts on the night were to lengthy.
The night also had exciting performances from several acts including, Nana Boroo, Mzbel, and music trio, RnM. The Azonto fever also gripped this year’s awards as comedian, Funny Face, actress Rose Mensah, popularly known as Kyeiwaa, and others gave a go at the dance.
Director Leila Djansi’s second production in Ghana, Ties That Bind scooped a whopping nine awards at the second edition of the Ghana Movie Awards. Hollywood’s lead actress, Kimberly Elise made history by being the first Hollywood movie actress to win a movie award in Ghana. Although she was not in attendance to pick up the award personally, Kimberly was crowned Best Actress in a Leading Role (English Language).
