Ghana: Movie awards promises to live up to expectations

By Peterking Quaye – The Director of the 2010 Ghana Movie Awards, Prince Tsegah has revealed that all set for the maiden awards show which seeks to award excellence in the Ghanaian movie industry.

The awards night which comes off on December 25 will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre, and according to Prince, who was speaking to Myjoyonline.com, the event will be attended by some crème de la crème of both the Ghanaian and the Nigerian movie industries.

The 25 categories of awards will are up for grabs with the high point being the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress. The winners for those two categories will each drive home a new Zotye SUV

Renowned Nigerian movie stars like Patience Ozokwor, Desmond Elliot, Mercy Johnson, Jim Ike, Tonto Dike and a host of well established Ghanaian actors are expected to attend the event.
In a related development ahead highly expected event reports from areliable source indicates that Uti Nwachukwu  who has been  nominated in the Best Actor – West Africa Collaboration category of the maiden Ghana Movie Awards for his role in ‘Bursting Out’. Uti Nwachukwu  faces stiff competition from fellow Nigerian actors, Yemi Blaq [SINKING SANDS], Ramsey Noah [GUILTY PLEASURES], and Desmond Elliot [GUILTY PLEASURES]. Big Brother All Star winner, Uti Nwachukwu says he doesn’t know what to think about his Ghana Movie Awards nomination since he hasn’t yet been officially told about it. When I asked him about his chances of winning the award slated for December 25, the actor, singer and reality TV star commented: “ummm…I haven’t received an official notification on my nomination oh. So I’m still not sure”.

Although Uti is well known across the African continent for his double appearance on the hit reality TV series, Big Brother Africa and for ultimately winning the most recent all-star edition, he first gained recognition in Ghana when he won the second position in the Next Movie Star (Ghana/Nigeria).

The awards night dubbed the Ultimate Party of the Season according to organisers will not only be about movie as a long list of celebrated Ghanaian music acts that include 4×4, V.I.P, Daseebre Gyamenah, Samini, Ofori Amponsah, Rana, Tic Tac, Wutah, Nana Boroo, Mimi, Kwabena Kwabena and Tinny.

Prince in an interview monitored from a top radio station  revealed that the awards night will be a history making one as it marks the first edition of the first ever movie awards to be held in the country.

“It is going to be a night of gilts and glamour, red carpet treatment, something you have never seen before. The movie industry is a very lucubrate and very competitive industry. We are about to see history being made, the first ever Ghana Movie Awards.”
