South Africa: Join SA’s flute wizard for live DVD recording
Expect musical fireworks when flautist Wouter Kellerman performs at the Victory Theatre for two nights only in April, to record his new live DVD.
The South African Music Award-winning flute maestro, one of the country’s most respected world music exponents who is known for his willingness to experiment with sounds, textures and multicultural influences, can be seen in action at the Victory Theatre in Houghton Estate on Friday, 8 April 2011 and Saturday, 9 April 2011 at 8pm.
Kellerman will join forces with some of the country’s top musicians, singers, dancers and visual artists to bring audiences an intoxicating live performance that is sure to dispel any preconceived or stereotyped notions they may have had about the limitations of flute music.
He’ll be supported at the two concerts by an ensemble of wonderful artists – bass player and vocalist Phresh Makhene, Senegalese percussionist and vocalist Lamine Sonko, guitarist Luke van der Merwe, vocalist Eunice Harris, Jaconell Mouton on keyboards, Nomso Tollie and Dlozi Chibi on backing vocals and dancers Munto Ngubane and Kabelo Sebusi.
After the recording of his live performance on ‘Kellerman Colour Live’ won the 2010 South African Music Award for Best Jazz/Instrumental/Popular Classical DVD, there has been increasing public demand for a follow-up live DVD.
The Victory Theatre concerts – and resulting DVD – will feature a selection of tracks from his debut CD, ‘Colour’, with the majority being from his second release ‘Two Voices’, which was launched late last year to much acclaim.
Kellerman spent two years compiling potent creative collaborations with the cream of South African and African musical talent for ‘Two Voices’ – including Sonko and Makhene, who can be seen in action during the concerts.
Each musician brought their own energy to the project, resulting in an album that serves up a variety of aural gems: from traditional Senegalese songs to tango-inspired numbers, from South African sounds and rhythms to Irish influences.
Kellerman co-produced ‘Two Voices’ with veteran producer JB Arthur, and travelled to Los Angeles to mix the album with Grammy-winning engineer Husky Hoskulds. The flautist’s focus was on connecting with the roots of the music and allowing each song’s essence to shine through, and the resulting album establishes Kellerman as a gifted and musically adventurous global music force to be reckoned with.
Last year, he performed at last year’s FIFA World Cup closing ceremony to a global television audience of 700-million people. Other performances include the Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg and the China Expo in Shanghai, as well as at the MIDEM musical conference and festival in Cannes and at the South by Southwest event in Austin, Texas – the biggest music festival in the world.
Kellerman and his world-class ensemble of musicians will explode in a dynamic fusion of global sounds on 8 and 9 April – be sure not to miss one of the most exhilarating live music experiences of the year!
