ZAIN MAMA’s set to thrill Africa

By Peterking Quaye – Africa will be set ablaze musically when Zain MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) approximately 1,000 artistes from far and near converges in the Nigeria’s capital of excellence to be recognize and rewarded for their works.

On Saturday, 11 December, the city of Lagos will come alive and will be live, with more than 1 million viewers around the world on MTV. This collaborative event of Zain Africa now powered by Bharti Airtel  and MTV Network Africa with it’s key focal point to recognize contemporary African music through a unique implementation  of an awards ceremony . More than 12 coveted awards from more than 12 categories will be presented to deserving musician and a legend of the music industry in Africa as well as an international musician. The inaugural MAMA was held at the Velodrome, Abuja in 2008, while October 2009 saw the awards move to Nairobi, Kenya and back to Nigeria .

The MTV Africa music awards since its inception in 2008 according to many critics as one of the ultimate celebration of unique contemporary African music and creativity is gaining huge audiences moving from country to another. This year’s edition has some news area such as Best Lusophone Act, Best Anglophone Act, Best Francophone Act, Brand New Act, and MAMA’s Legend, to show the diversity of the event.

At a press briefing in Accra, at the flagship on the 29th October, Oare Ojeikere, Zain Ghana Marketing Director, was of the comment that “The MTV Africa Awards is an excellent platform created by the combined strengths of a telecommunication giant and market leader in music television to showcase the best talents that this continent has to offer.”He urged all lovers of African music to participate in the competition and take advantage of the opportunity to witness this exciting event, he added.

The Africa Music Awards has come a long way after two years ,it seems to serve as a promotional platform for the African music industry ,trying to focus on some country’s  artiste who have distinguished themselves with a certain level of creativity in the genre of music .

Some music critics see the event has over branded, typical of most Africa entertainment and thereby making other brand icon attitude towards participation and involvement limited, the rotational aspect is gradually making the event aim as an Africa event questionable with Nigeria hosting for the second time, which critics see it as a way to discourage other fast growing African country involvement limited.
