Liberians at Buduburam Camp are returning home starting Dec.16 2011
By Peterking Quaye– for Shout-Africa.com – Developing news received by Shout-Africa.com from Ghana has confirmed that many Liberian refugees at the Buduburam camp are reportedly returning to their native country voluntarily after an announcement by the Ghana Refugee Board that they will lose their refugee status by June 2012.
Estimated over 8,000 of the refugees are said to have already gone back to Liberia. The decision, which is being implemented by the international community will cut aid supplies to the 11, 000 refugees. Liberia recently held its second democratic election after experiencing years of civil war.
The Information Officer of UNHCR, Ewurabena Hutchful, told a local station in an interview monitored this morning in the Ghanaian capital, Accra saying that the commission had been expecting this to happen for the last two years and is not surprised that the refugees will lose their status come next year.
The United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) said it has already asked the remaining refugees to seek assistance to either be reintegrated into the Ghanaian community or return to their countries before June.
