EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (one year contract, reviewable)

The Johannesburg based Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) was formed in 1994 to defend freedom of expression, to oppose censorship and to promote media diversity. The Institute seeks to appoint an Executive Director in an exciting and challenging environment.

This is a high profile position that requires the incumbent to provide overall strategic leadership and ensure the effective management of the organisation.

Requirements: a track record of managing programmes, people and finances, preferably in an NGO environment; strong organisational  skills, fundraising experience and a track record in developing
funding proposals; excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; financial management skills; a commitment to the vision, mission and objectives of the FXI; and an understanding of the freedom of expression environment in South Africa and the rest of the
continent; experience in handling the media; good people skills and networking abilities, and the ability to multitask and work under pressure. A relevant postgraduate qualification is desirable.

HEAD OF LAW CLINIC / PUBLIC INTEREST LAWYER – JOHANNESBURG (one year contract, reviewable)

The Freedom of Expression Institute Law Clinic (FXI) provides free legal services to victims of censorship, undertakes high-impact litigation to defend and advance the Right to Freedom of Expression (and associated rights), and seeks to appoint a qualified attorney to the position of Head of the Law Clinic, on a contract basis.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing direction as the Head of the Law Clinic. The performance of his/her duties would include management of the Law Clinic, high-impact litigation at the level of the Constitutional and High courts, assisting victims of censorship (including litigation), provision of expert evidence, research and writing, legal capacity-building, extensive legal
training on laws such as PAIA and the RGA, lobbying and advocacy, around the following issues: Freedom of expression and media freedom, e.g. hate speech, defamation, copyright infringement, protection of journalistic sources; freedom of expression in the workplace; access to information, using PAIA; right to protest, using the Regulation of Gatherings Act (‘RGA’); access to telecommunications and broadcasting.

Requirements: An LLB degree, admitted attorney; Litigation experience of at least 4-6 years; Legal training experience; Project management experience & interpersonal skills; Own transport; Proficiency in two or more South African languages would be an advantage. Passion for public interest and/or media law required, experience in at least one of these fields preferable.
