Former Governor now Vice President of Ghana
By MORKPORKPOR ANKU (ACCRA-GHANA) – Former Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has been approved the Appointment Committee of Ghana’s Parliament as the new Vice President of the Republic Ghana.
This was after he was sworn-in by the Chief Justice Georgina Wood, Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana at ceremony on the floor of Parliament in Accra late Monday evening.
Dr Amissah-Arthur took his oaths of office in accordance with Article 60(10) of the 1992 Constitution.
After signing, Dr Amissah-Arthur in a symbolic gesture was made to occupy the vice-president’s chair and looked quite confident.
The Speaker Joyce Bamford Addo congratulated the new Vice President and wished him well in his new role.
Dr Amissah-Arthur in a statement after the swearing-in thanked the president John Mahama for reposing confidence in him.
He also thanked members of the clergy for their unflinching support and prayers for him as well as the Members of Parliament for their thorough job and unanimity in carrying out the unprecedented assignment of vetting and swearing-in a non-elected vice-president.
Dr Amissah-Arthur was nominated for the position of Vice President following the death of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, President of the Republic of Ghana.
The former Vice President of the Country Mr John Dramani Mahama, who is currently the President of the country, was sworn in as president immediately after the death of the President.
The late President’s death occurred at the 37 military hospital in Accra on Tuesday July 24, 2012 afternoon while receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours earlier.
