Gambia: Deputy Speaker position now occupied
By Femi Peters – After due consideration by the national assembly, Mrs Fatou Mbye was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. Mrs Mbye was elected unopposed following her nomination by Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, majority leader and member for Serrekunda East, which was seconded by Hon. Sidia Jatta of the opposition National Alliance for Democracy and Development.
The seat of the deputy Speaker had been left unoccupied since the former Deputy Speaker; Abdoulie Bojang was elected and made the new Speaker of the National Assembly.
Mrs Fatou Mbye, who chaired the National Women’s Council and was the Director General of the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) until her election was a retired teacher and educationist. This election was carried out on the 29th of November, 2010.
