Gambia: Teranga FM back on air
By Own Correspondent – Barely a month since it was ordered to cease operations, Teranga FM, a community radio station based in Sinchu Alagie village in the Kombo North district of West Coast Region, is now back on air, The Point has learned.
Though officials of the radio station could not be reached for comment, sources close to the radio said it resumed operations yesterday afternoon.
Established in 2009, the radio was ordered to cease operations in January 2011, a move sources believed was linked to the radio’s daily review, in the main Gambian languages, of the news in the local newspapers.
Teranga FM’s review of the independent press generated a lot of attention from the public, most of whom rely on it to get the news, which is normally broadcast in Wollof and Mandinka, the two main local languages.
Our sources further revealed that the radio has resumed broadcasting, but will suspend its regular programs which review the news published by the independent press.
