Google celebrates Uganda’s 49th Independence
Lira- The big search engine Google on 9th October developed a doodle logo as a dedication to Uganda as it celebrates its 49 years of independence. The doodle logo with the independence day monument is seen above a search space on Google Uganda. The monument was constructed by the British Colonial Government just before Uganda’s first independence cerebrations on October 9, 1962.
The Independence Monument was built by Gregory Magoba, one of Uganda’s first professional sculptors and was unveiled by Uganda’s first Prime Minister Apollo Milton Obote, on October 5, 1962, a few days before Uganda’s first Independence celebrations.
It depicts a man unwrapping a child and raising the child to touch the sky. The sculpture signifies a new born country let free from colonialism and bondages.
Independence day
Uganda’s Independence day is 9th October, which is today and celebrations are scheduled to take place in Lira town, in the northern part of the country. Uganda is celebrating her 49th independence day just a day after narrowly failing to qualify for the Africa Cups of Nation when they failed to beat Kenya at home and bring the perfect Independence gift.
The whole of yesterday night was a day of tears across the country. Today is a day of celebration across Uganda but the composer of the national anthem, Professor George William Kakoma, 88-year-old, is on bed after suffering from a stroke on August 10 this year.
Ugandans’ reaction to Independence day.
Many Ugandans are not taking the vents of this day seriously, saying that they have been disappointed by the events in Uganda. Corruption is making it increasingly difficult for anyone to feel like they are Ugandans. One has to bribe to get a service they should get as a citizen, say at hospital or in any government office.
Many people say it is difficult to get a job unless you are “somebody’s” son or daughter or giving something in return.
The head of publicity on the National Organising Committee (NOC), Chris Magoba, said, “This year’s independence will be held in Lira because we want to take the celebrations out to the community. It could have been any other district.”
This year’s independence anniversary will be marked under the theme, “On the threshold of the golden jubilee of Uganda’s independence: success and challenges.”
