LIBERIA: LWI Donates to “WASH Ebola Away Strategy”
…As Acting Country Director Pledges More Support – By: WASH R&E “Media” Network – Living Water International–LWI, an international charity operating in Liberia, has made an initial donation of preventive Ebola materials valued over five thousand United States Dollars to the WASH Ebola Away Strategy.
The items included 100 cartoons of water guards, 130 cartoons of pop detergent soap, 120 cartoons of chlorine and 220 rubber faucet buckets.
The preventive Ebola materials were presented to the “WASH Ebola Away Strategy” on Thursday as the Group extended its operations to three communities in Monrovia and environs following the official launch recently by Liberia’s Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai.
According to Living Water International Acting Country Director, Austin Nyaplue, the donation to the Strategy came from the global office commitment in supporting the Liberian Government in many areas, mainly in the wake of the Ebola outbreak in Liberia and the sub-region.
Mr. Nyaplue said his Entity’s contribution to the Strategy not huge but stated that “Little is much when God is in it”.
“So let all of us hold on to this little gesture and work around it to ensure that these items reach the needed and targeted beneficiaries”, LWI Acting Country Director stressed.
He disclosed that Living Water International will continue it support the Liberian Government in other areas but for now, LWI’s focus will be to help government respond to communities that are high hit by the Ebola virus.
The LWI Acting Country Director cautioned those who will be distributing the anti Ebola materials from the various community levels that they must exhibit transparency and must not use the items to decorate their homes and not to continuously give to those who already have and can afford.
“By doing what is not right in the WASH Ebola Away Strategy at the community levels will definitely hinder in actual fight to combat the virus” Mr. Nyaplue reiterated.
He stated that challenges will be there at the various community levels in implementing the mandate of the Strategy, mainly getting volunteers to carry out the task but “please, do this for your communities as we all are fighting to defeat a single cause, the Ebola virus which is eating up the socio-economic fabric of our beloved nation Liberia”.
Mr. Nyaplue then praised Assistant Public Works Minister for Community Services, George Yarngo and the Coordinator of the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Committee at the Public Works Ministry, Abdul Koroma for coordinating things with other local and international organizations, putting the Strategy at a good start.
The government of Liberia, through the Public Works Ministry commanded Living Water International for the donation.
Assistant Public Works Minister for Community Services, George Yarngo called on other organizations the follow the good steps of LWI.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Promotion Committee, Abdul Koroma thanked Living Water International, describing the donation as very important and timely.
On behalf of the WASH Sector of Liberia, he promised that the items will be properly utilized in the interest of the needy and in the fight against Ebola.
