Liberia: National Spelling Bee competition race intensifies
The 2nd Annual National Spelling Bee competition train stopped in the ELWA area for the Zone B edition after successfully hosting Zone A at the CDB King School on Camp Johnson road.
The competition has intensified with the next stop at E Jonathan Goodridge School in the Gardnersville Area. Zone B, played host to schools candidates in the Paynesville, ELWA Community, SKD Complex, Duport Road, Red Light, Coca Cola Factory, Zubah Town72nd
The Zone saw the reigning champion battling for spot in the Semi-final; she however made it joining the 10 finalist for Zone B. The National Spelling Bee has become a song on the lips of many school going children in many elementary Education sector of Liberia has left many trace of impediments that student’s ability to read or spell is highly doubtful.
The Winner from Zone B were: Bondo Lancelot from Isaac A. Davis School ,Toe Roberts,N, from Christ the King Catholic School , Greene Martaylor Blessing and Dixon Faith ,Eyea both from Kid Life Mission School and Allion Dwehline ,K. of E.L.W.A Academy for Category A and for Category B winner were Horton Maluabah ,Thompson Sangaye and Kimberlyn Praise Johnson all from James E. Copper Foundation Academy ,Ojikutu Tosin from Spiritan Academy as well as Cephus Kidness , N from Monrovia Open Bible Standard School .These students are heading for the semi-finals to meet winners from Zone A, as well Zone C and D.
Wuoson Foundation International, is a local international non- governmental organization has been a front-runner to consolidate the education of many young Liberian through the organizing of the WFI-National Spelling Bee Competition .The Foundation in its second year of operation in Liberia aims at focusing on key areas of Liberian society .
Speaking in an interview with Focus News ,Mr. Abraham Wheon ,Executive Director of Wuoson Foundation International said the event has come to stay “we will take it nationwide in few months time ,educating the youth is our goal” he added. Mr. Wheon admonished the parent and children to observe the rules of the competition as it is the same rule for the international version as well. But assure Liberians that very soon it will be coming to a school near them.
Zone B saw 10 finalist qualifying to the semi-final to meet other from Zone A, C and D in March, the competition started in 2011 in Monrovia but the organizers are far advance in preparation to increase the number of schools in the competition as well as the number of counties participating in the competition in Liberia .In all 20 finalist are expected to compete for prize, the right to the title of the national spelling Bee competition 2012.
This year competition has an estimated 150 students from over 250 elementary schools in Monrovia alone. Notwithstanding many school were calling for the extension in the period of submission of forms.
Meanwhile come Friday 2nd March, 2012, the Zone C edition will be hosted at the E Jonathan Goodridge in LWA Gymnasium in Paynesville City.
