Liberia: President Weah launches first Sanitation Campaign
By: WASH R&E “Media” Network – The Liberian Leader, President George M. Weah has officially launched his first Sanitation Campaign in the nation’s capital, Monrovia.
The Urban Sanitation Campaign named the “Weah for Clean City” Initiative, is intended to keep Monrovia clean as part of the new government 100-day deliverables.
President Weah under his Pro-Poor Agenda has launched several other initiatives, but says the latest Sanitation Campaign is geared toward helping community residents appreciate the need to keep their surroundings clean.
Keeping the community clean is essential to eradicating diseases and building a healthy life amongst poor urban dwellers, the President said.
The Liberian Leader noted that the symbolic cleaning-up campaign launched by the Monrovia City Corporation brought to his mind memories of his childhood days in the slum.
President WASH Said many years ago, he went on dumpsites in search of bottles and cans disposed of.
As he removed piles of dirt from the Rally Town Market using a shovel and wheel barrow, the President said he was proud to pick up garbage again in an effort to keep the city clean and green.
President Weah said keeping a clean and green city was important, pledging his support to ensure that various parts of the city are cleaned up through the campaign.
He praised Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koijee for the “Weah for Clean City” Campaign Initiative, especially naming it in his honor
The President and First Lady, Clar Weah were joined in the field by several senior government officials.
The organizer, the Monrovia City Corporation has meanwhile expressed hope to duplicate the exercise across the country in the near future.
Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koijee said the program will yield health benefits for many households and community dwellers, thus reducing the possibility of the contraction of curable diseases like malaria and diarrhea.
The City Mayor also called on community residents to take ownership of the Sanitation Initiative, noting that more than 700,000 residents will directly benefit from the program across the capital.
He said communities will also benefit directly from sponsored projects of the City Corporation, such as the construction of toilets, cleaning drainages, and protection of waterways.
