LIBERIA: Town Center Community embarks on major road rehabilitation project

Myers – Residents of the Town Center Community in New Georgia Township have successfully completed the rehabilitation of a one mile road which connects the Community to the rest of the Township of New Georgia and Monrovia. The Project is estimated at a little over ten thousand (10,000) United States dollars.
Town Center Community established in 1823 (before Liberia gained Independence) is the oldest Settlement in the Township of New Georgia.
The Community had been almost inaccessible due to appalling road condition. The bad road condition embarrassed the movements of pedestrians and motorists with students, business and other working residents experiencing serious difficulty on a daily basis moving in and out of the Community.
The situation compiled the Community, through its Leadership to embark on a major self help Road Rehabilitation Project since National government could not recondition the road at the time.
The Secretary General of the Town Center Community, Alvin D. Dennis described the initiative as team work and in the best interest of the entire community.
He commanding efforts of the young people who initiated the Project by using rocks, dirt and pieces of blocks to fill in the many potholes and drainages to rehabilitate the road.
Speaking to the Press Monday, he said the road condition was so terrible that even a 4-wheel vehicle could ply the road easily.
According to Mr. Dennis, as community residents they were first grateful to God for the success of the Road Rehabilitation Project and also to the farsighted Leadership for its commitment to development.
He named a local Group, “Women of Substance”, Mr. Baker “a Community Resident”, the Apenahier Family, other well-meaning individuals and community members as brains behind the success of the road project.
Mr. Dennis expressed joy that the Town Center Community in New Georgia Township is now celebrating the New Year 2014 with a new and reconditioned road.
He commanded the Chair Person of the Community, Mrs. Susie B.J. Apenahier and Family for the high level of personal financial contributions, and called on residents to show appreciation and remain united as a people in championing community development.
For her part, the Chair Person of the Town Center Community in New Georgia Township, Mrs. Susie B.J. Apenahier said the Road Rehabilitation Project was necessitated due to constant cries and calls by her people, and the need to help themselves in the absence of government’s intervention to rehabilitate their only road.
She said the Town Center Community Road was in a deplorable state and needed urgent attention. “We wrote and appealed to Government, through the Public Works Ministry to come to our aid, but the Ministry could not intervene so we decided to champion our own cause”, Mrs. Apenahier pointed out.
“The road though a dusty road is up to standard now and that we will place speed breaker to prevent accident cases and will also regularly water the road for the dust”, the Town Center Community Chair Person emphasized as some of the safety measures.
Mrs. Apenahier commanded goodwill individuals and organizations, including Mr. Baker and the Women of Substance, her Husband, Family and others for their financial, moral and material contributions to the success of the Town Center Community Road Rehabilitation Project.
She also challenged the Public works Ministry to do asphalt pavement of the Town Center Community Road in New Georgia Township, as part of efforts to resolve the issue of deplorable road condition, especially during the raining season.
The eloquent and tough talking Town Center Community Chair Person reminded Government of its responsibility which includes the paving of the Community Road and the provision of other basic social services.
Mrs. Apenahier also disclosed that as part of development initiatives, her Leadership liaised with an organization to construct two hand pumps and rehabilitated another two hand pumps in the Community.
She also said her Leadership is currently negotiating for parcels of land to construct the first modern public latrines.
Mrs. Apenahier said there are eleven different communities which fall under the Town Center Community, with a huge population of mostly women and children.
According to her, 2014 will be a year to foster community development and also to prioritize Youth Empowerment in the Town Center Community.
Mrs. Apenahier urged residents of the Community to remain united and hard working to always achieve in their development drive.
Residents of the Town Center Community Road in New Georgia Township, including motorists were seen rejoicing and freely making use of the road, as most of the residents described the initiative as a relief and a start to boost development in the Community.
