Nigeria: Boko Haram hits Kano again
By Emeka Umejei, Nigeria – Despite huge presence of security in Kano city, Islamist militants of the Jama’atu Ahli Sunna lid Da’awati wal Jihad, known as BokoHaram yesterday evening struck the ancient city of Kano again.
The sect bombed the Sharada Police Division at about 7pm but the number of casualties from the attack is yet to be known.
However, sources within the area said scores of policemen attached to the police Division sustained Gunshot injuries.
As at the time of this report, 8pm gun battle is still raging in the area between members of the sect and the Police.
The situation created panic as residents ran for safety. Government officials stated that the 6am-6pm curfew is still in force in the state, the curfew was imposed following several bomb explosions that rocked the state late January.
The attack on Sharada Police Division brings to 5, the number of police stations bombed since the devastating bomb attacks of January 20. Some other Police divisions attacked include Farm Center,Mandori,Sheka, and Naibawa Police stations where some lives of police officers and civilians were lost.
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakaronly last week deployed additional 10 units of Mobile Police Unit (Mopol) to Kano state to beef up security in the state following the death of over 200 persons in the January 20 attack.
