Nigeria: Talks between Labour and Federal Government underway in Abuja
By Shout-Africa Correspondent Chinyere Ogbonna – Representatives of organised labour are expected currently in Abuja, the Nation’s capital today to continue dialogue with the Federal Government over the removal of subsidy on petrol and the reversal of the pump price of fuel to 65 naira per litre.
Labour’s meeting with the President which is expected to hold at 6pm will also have some State Governors, Ministers and the Senate leadership in attendance.
Ahead of the talks at the Presidential Villa, the National Executive Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress will meet at the NLC Headquarters at 1pm to strategize on how to streamline their demands.
Their last meeting on Thursday January 12th was deadlocked although the labour leaders described the discussions as fruitful.
Meanwhile Labour and the joint Action Front suspended their street protests for two days, today Saturday, 14th and Sunday 15th to afford them time to meet with the government and to allow Nigerians rest from their daily gatherings.
The Union Leaders however insist that the strike will continue on Monday if an amicable agreement is not reached with the government.
Also, the Civil Rights Coalitions which also held mammoth rallies in Lagos also suspended their street protests for two days. Speaking to the protesters, the convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare said the decision is to allow the protesters rest and give government two days to reverse petrol price to 65 naira per litre.
