Tanzania, Uganda agree on cross border railway
By Shout-Africa Correspondent, Dar es Salaam – The governments of Tanzania and Uganda have agreed to fast track the construction of a Tanzania-Uganda railway to facilitate movement of goods in the area and especially between the two countries which share a long history of cooperation.
The agreement was announced yesterday after a one day state visit and talks between President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museven in Dar es Salaam. The agreement will see the construction of a Tanga-Musoma-Uganda railway that will open “the third door” for Ugandan goods from the Indian Ocean.
The decision to construct the line was a long dream of the Tanzanian founding father, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. The two leaders also discussed a number of issues relating to bilateral cooperation, regional and international politics.
