Transnet Foundation donates R250 000 in desks to school in Khuma
Transnet Foundation was formed to help build a healthy, safe and educated nation, with a focus on providing a consistent and ongoing helping hand to the less fortunate communities across South Africa. Through their various corporate social investment projects, Transnet Foundation has been reaching out and empowering rural communities – through better healthcare, sport, education, grants and employee volunteer programs.
A key investment for Transnet Foundation is assisting communities, particularly areas like Khuma, Stilfontein, where Transnet has significant operations. Through Transnet Freight Rail and the Foundation’s Container Assistance Programme, a project was launched at the end of May 2013 to improve safety and assist the community in understanding the importance of sustaining their rail transportation. One such area that was visited was Dirang Ka Natla.
Following the successful launch of the project, Transnet Foundation received a request for sponsorship from Dirang Ka Natla Comprehensive School. They had been struggling with infrastructure and a shortage of classroom equipment. In desperate need of 250 desks, the school submitted an appeal to the Foundation.
Cultivating keen minds and providing support to the future leaders of South Africa fit the Foundation ethos. With this in mind, Transnet Foundation investigated the application and confirmed the request. They then partnered with Transnet Engineering to facilitate the manufacture of the desks.
By providing such integral furniture to schools in need, Transnet hopes to make a positive impact on the education and quality of learning for all pupils at Dirang Ka Natla Comprehensive School.
Today the Transnet Foundation proudly presented Dirang Ka Natla Comprehensive School with their 250 desks, which totalled a cost of R250 000. Transnet representatives, the community, school members and the media were invited to share in the joy with the children and witness the official handover.
“We are very proud to have sponsored these desks. With this donation, pupils are able to work better and harder. It raises morale, improves the standard of education and gives the pupils the tools they need to improve their community and way of life.” – Cynthia Mgijima, Head of Transnet Foundation at Transnet Limited
