Tubman University launches Ebrary project

The William V.S. Tubman University is actively seeking support for its programs and initiatives. Rev. Rita Townsend, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Barbara Simmons, JD, Dean for International Education, met with Mickey L. Burnim, Ph.D., President of Bowie State University. Dr. Burnim and his Cabinet warmly received the delegation from Tubman University, at a meeting on the campus of Bowie State University on 26 June 2013. Mrs. Roberta Brown Cooper, President for Marylanders for Progress (Liberia), Inc., was instrumental in setting up meetings and appointments for the Tubman University delegation. The delegation also met with the Economic Development Corporation of Prince George’s County to explore opportunities for partnerships. Later, joined by Elizabeth Davis-Russell,Ed.D., Ph.D., President of the William V.S. Tubman University, the delegation attended a meeting with the Maryland / Liberia Sister States Program (MLSSP). Executive Chair of the MLSSP, Sharon Pinder, thanked Dr. Davis-Russell for the progress at the 4-year old institution of tertiary education. MLSSP is also looking into partnerships with the University. Earlier in the day, the delegation met with the Dean of the STEM program, Director of Library Science, Information Technology professors at Prince George’s Community College.

William V. S. Tubman University, in collaboration with the William V.S. Tubman University Foundation Board, and Marylanders for Progress (Liberia), Inc. also launched the Harriet Tubman Ebrary Architectural Design Competition, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Howard, Morgan State, Tuskegee, and the William V.S. Tubman University on 28 June 2013 at the Blackburn Center at Howard University in Washington DC, United States of America.

Present at the ceremony were TU President Dr. Elizabeth Davis-Russell, Deans, Vice Presidents, representative of the Liberian Ambassador to the United States of America. Students and alumnae of Howard, Morgan State, and Tuskegee Universities also witnessed the historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing with well-wishers and supporters of TU.

The  MOU authenticates the relationship between these institutions, whose students of their colleges of Architecture and Design will compete for the winning design of an “Ebrary”, state-of -the- art edifice, on the campus of the William V.S. Tubman University in Tubman Town, Maryland County, Republic of Liberia. The “Ebrary” will hold over 100,000 electronic books, 435 academic, trade and professional journals, and publications. The “Ebrary” will also include sections for the Center for Teaching and Excellence for faculty development, a student development center, and a high- tech information technology center for students, faculty, and the greater community.

Marylander for Progress (Liberia) Inc., an American non- profit organization, has supported the William V.S. Tubman University since 2009, and did sponsor a solar cooker work shop for the southeastern counties in April 2013 at the Tubman Town Campus of TU in Maryland County. Liberian Diaspora supports Marylanders for Progress programs in Liberia.

The William V.S. Tubman University Foundation Board, corps of volunteer members, has a mission to generate support for quality educational opportunities at Tubman University that will transform lives in service to Liberia, Africa and the world.
