Zimbabwe court throws out Bennett appeal
By Nangayi Guyson – The Supreme Court in Zimbabwe on Thursday threw out an appeal against the acquittal of Roy Bennett in an alleged plot to overthrow President Robert Mugabe, his lawyer said Thursday. Roy Bennett, the white 53-year-old former farmer was arrested in February 2009, shortly before he was to be sworn in, over accusations that he had funded a plot to topple Mugabe five years ago.

Roy Bennett, the white 53-year-old former farmer and a top aide to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, was arrested in February 2009, shortly before he was to be sworn in, over accusations that he had funded a plot to topple Mugabe five years ago
He was acquitted in May last year after a high court judge ruled the state had failed to connect him to a plot against Mugabe of which Prosecutors filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the acquittal. Mugabe has vowed he will never swear in Bennett
“The judgment was delivered by the Supreme Court today and the ruling said the application against the acquittal of Roy Bennett had no chances of success,” attorney Beatrice Mtetwa told AFP.
Bennett’s case is one of the major stumbling blocks facing the unity government between Mugabe and Tsvangirai, who had tapped him as deputy agriculture minister in the unity government.
