Zimbabwe’s “Egyptians” Remanded to Monday

zimbabwean protestorsBy Misheck Rusere – Zimbabwe’s suspected Egypt style protesters have been remanded to Monday the 28th of February at the request of the state to respond to the accused persons’ application made by their lawyer Aleck Muchadehama.

Muchadehama made several applications including that his clients be allowed to see their medical doctors before Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi ruled that the 45 receive medical attention at Harare Remand prison.

Munyaradzi Gwisai, one of the accused along with other seven had indicated that they were tortured while in police custody at Harare Central Police’s Law and Order section.

However Muchadehama reminded the trial magistrate that the placement of his clients on remand should never be misconstrued to mean they were accepting the charges.

“The court should be reminded that the placement of the accused persons on remand should not be misconstrued to mean they are accepting the charges but rather a response to the state’s request,” said Muchadehama.

The forty five were yesterday charged with treason which attracts a penalty of death sentence or life imprisonment if one is convicted, as such the magistrate’s courts have no jurisdiction over the matter.

The state led by Mr. Edwin Nyazamba is expected to respond to the accused persons’ application made in respect of each of the accused persons on Monday.

The protesters have been nicknamed the “Egyptians” after the Egypt  uprising that ousted the country’s long time dictator Hosni Mubarack..
