Barrister Akere Muna commends Tanzania for joining APRM

By Special Correspondent – The lead panelist for the visiting Country Review Mission (CRM) to Tanzania, Barrister Akere Muna, has commended the government of Tanzania for being one of more than 33 African countries participating in the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

Barrister Muna was speaking with the press in a CRM launching session with the press in Dar es Salaam. The CRM comprising of 20 top African experts will be in Tanzania from 2 March to 23 March.

“Since the country joined the process in 2004 it has been consistent in its commitment to ensure that the process moves on. The presence of government representative in this press briefing indicates how commit Tanzania is to the mechanism,” said the Barrister in a press briefing accompanied by other members of the CRM.

On his part the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mahadhi Juma Maalim whose Ministry is the focal point coordinator, emphasized that APRM is a major African innovation.

“There are many assessment institutions but APRM is unique as it is a locally owned process. Tanzania looks forward to achieve a lot both politically and economically in implementing the process,” he said.

The chairman to the APRM Tanzania National Governing Council (NGC), Prof. Hassa Mlawa noted that Tanzania had prepared its own report ready for implementation to remove the identified governance gaps.

He added that the arrival of the mission to Tanzania was a significant milestone in the country’s quest for improved democracy, sustained political stability and promotion of human rights.
