Gambia National House of Assembly gets New Speaker.
By Femi Peters (The Gambia) – Gambia National House of Assembly gets new speaker, Hon Abdoulie Bojang just one week after the recent sacking of Mrs Elizabeth Renner, the former speaker of the Gambia National House of Assembly by of the President Yahya Jammeh on Thursday, November 04, 2010 and her nomination revoked as a member of the National Assembly, with effect from 3rd November 2010.
This vacant seat, subsequently called for an election which was scheduled to take place on the 12th of November, 2010.After the resumption of the house, a motion was called for the nomination of the speaker which brought about the voting into power, Hon Abdoulie Bojang as the New Speaker of the Gambia House of Assembly .Hon abdoulie Bojang had served in the capacity of the Deputy Speaker for about four years and was considered the best candidate by his colleagues for the position. His nomination was raised by the majority Leader, Hon Fabakary and was seconded by the minority leader, Hon Momodu Sanneh then the house unanimously elected Hon Abdouie Bojang as the Speaker. He was however sworn in immediately by the Chief justice of The Gambia, Justice Emmanuel Agim.
The Sack of the former Speaker was in exercise of the powers vested in the President under the provisions of section 231 (1) of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia. Elected as speaker of the National Assembly on 17th June 2009, Elizabeth Renner, a retired high school principal, was a nominated MP prior to her election as speaker of the Gambian legislature by her colleagues. No reasons has yet been given for her removal still date.
