Liberia: ECOWAS wants Liberian peace maintained
(NEC/Monrovia, September 22, 2011) The visiting special envoys of the Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS) have urged all peace loving Liberians to help maintain the peace already achieved in Liberia.
Former Nigerian President General Abdu salami Abubakar who spoke for the visiting team, said ECOWAS is interested in maintaining the peace already achieved in Liberia. He said the maintenance of the peace made it necessary for their visit to give what so ever assistance to the 2011 Presidential and Legislative electoral process.
General Abubakar made the statement today during a brief welcome ceremony held in their honor by the Chairman of the National Elections Commission, James M. Fromayan and Acting Foreign Minister Levi Demark upon arrival at the Robert International airport.
Earlier, Acting Foreign Minister Levi Demark welcome the ECOWAS Envoys and said that the government has already set the stage for the democratic electoral process in the country and that there was no turning back.
In his welcome remarks, NEC Chairman James Fromayan said the Board of Commissioners of NEC is very much interested in conducting a free, fair and credible democratic elections void of violence and therefore welcome the involvement of ECOWAS and other partners in the electoral process.
Chairman Fromayan assured the ECOWAS envoys that the Board of Commissioners of NEC would highly consider their advice and interventions that would help to enhance the holding of free , fair and credible electoral process.
The ECOWAS envoys were later escorted to the UNMIL Headquarters where they held interactive discussions with the Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary General Ellen Margrethe Loj.
Former Nigerian President, Gen. Abdu Salami Abubakar and former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor also visited the NEC Headquarters where they also held discussion with the Board of Commissioners of NEC. The ECOWAS envoys are expected to pay a courtesy call on President Ellen Jo0hnson Sirleaf on Friday morning at her Foreign Ministry offices in Monrovia and later meet with other stakeholders in the Liberian political arrangement.
