Supreme Court Ruling Disappointing – Sierra Leone’s Opposition Party
By Emeka Umejei – Sierra Leone’s major Opposition party, The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has described the country’s Supreme Court decision to strike out its petition against the 17 November 2012 presidential election as disappointing.
According to press statement signed by its national secretary general, Sulaiman Baria Tejan-Sie, the SLPP notes that the decision of the Supreme Court amounts to sacrificing justice at the altar of procedural technicalities.
The SLPP said it views the judgement as an attempt by the Supreme Court to frustrate efforts to legally address its concerns regarding the November 2012 polls.
The SLPP said it is saddened by the development because it will “deny Sierra Leoneans the opportunity know the scale and magnitude of the widespread and systemic electoral malpractices perpetuated by the National Electoral Commission with other state actors.”
While it acknowledges the verdict of the Supreme Court, and urged its supporters across the country to remain calm, it says it will explore all legitimate options open it.
