Liberia: Margibi rules county meeting Football but Nimba County, wins overall trophy

By Peterking Quaye in Monrovia, Liberia The Liberia national county sport meeting finally comes to an end. Margibi County walked away with the kickball and football trophies, while Nimba County walked away with the Tennis, Volleyball and Basketball trophies. Grand Bassa won third place kickball trophy while Bong County won third place football trophy. Nimba County became Overall Winner of the just-ended 2010/2011 National County Meet with a total of 48 points from all games of the fiesta – football, basketball, kickball, Volleyball and athletics – ahead of all other participating teams.

History has it that The ‘Mountainous boys’ of Nimba County has won the football coronets in the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011  National County Meets, after 31 years of championship drought. In the 2009/2010 County meeting, Nimba County dragged the “Putu boys” from Grand Gedeh County, 2-0 and in the 2010/2011 edition; she whipped the “Gibi boys” from Margibi County, 1-0. Nimba County, from 1977 to 1979, won the three County Meet Football titles, during the era of the Late William R. Tolbert, Jr.

If the ‘Mountainous boys’ thrash-out the Putu boys on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at the Samuel  K. Doe Sports Complex, she will be setting three records, namely: the second flogging of the Margibi County football team in the County Meet finals; clinching of the triple football title under the same President; and the second triple football title.

Meanwhile, reports say the Gibi boys have vowed to release their magical wand to upset Nimba County.  In the 2009/2010 County Meet, the two counties met in the 3rd place battle, wherein Bong emerged victorious after an 4-3 penalty shoot-outs. The northern county retained the football trophy which it won last year and clinched the volleyball cup, defeating Magibi County 1 – 0 and beating Grand Bassa County in three straight sets, respectively.

The girls of Maryland County captured the kickball crown from their Nimba County counterparts becoming the new champions of the sport. Margibi beat Sinoe to take the basketball cup, while Grand Cape Mount dominated the athletics events, followed by, followed by Montserrado County.
