LIBERIA: WaterAid Signs MOU with PCC

As part of its strategy in addressing Solid Waste huddles in Greater Monrovia and the Paynesville municipality, the British charity WaterAid has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Paynesville City Corporation. The objective of the MOU is intended to layout the terms of WaterAid providing financial support and in-kind technical support to Paynesville City Corporation (PCC) for two projects being undertaken by PCC in the coming months. The first of these is a research study on climate change effects on six communities within Paynesville.

Advocacy and public awareness in the WASH sector of Liberia started as far back as 2008/9. At the time, the issue of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) was a strange phenomenon and as such it was not considered to be relevant. The involvement of individuals of civil society organizations and the media could not be over emphasized, as there was a need to ensure advocacy and public awareness for WASH.

Liberia: Greater Monrovia residents call for robust action to address sanitation crisis

Appalling sanitation in Greater Monrovia over the years has been a major challenge for several residents and municipalities in Montserrado County. This condition continues to make life unbearable for several residents, despite the interventions of the World Bank, European Union, and other WASH partners. The intervention by these donors is aimed at creating an enabling environment for water, sanitation, and hygiene in the country.

The British charity WaterAid has launched a sanitation project aimed at addressing issues of solid waste management in Greater Monrovia and environs. Garbage situation in Greater Monrovia is alarming, resulting to the need for stakeholders to jointly develop and strengthen a comprehensive solid waste management strategy for Greater Monrovia. The Sanitation Project is intended to support Greater Monrovia for the Development of a Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste Strategy.
