Liberia: New statistics reveal scale of challenge ahead….

Figures released today reveal the scale of the challenge ahead to bring universal access to water and sanitation in Liberia by 2030, the international development organisation WaterAid has said. WaterAid’s analysis of figures released today by the Joint Monitoring Programme-a body set up by UNICEF and the World Health Organization to collate data on water and sanitation coverage, shows that Liberia will deliver a community source of clean water within a 30-minute round trip to everyone by 2071.

LIBERIA: WASH Media report makes impact in Paynesville

The issue of the timely removal of garbage in the Paynesville area has become a serious challenge for marketers, community residents and even the Management of the Paynesville City Corporation (PCC). Due to the prolong stay of garbage in the area, residents and marketers have become complaining about the health risk involved. As part of its activities under WaterAid, WASH Reporters and Editors Network of Liberia has among other things been following the situation in the commercial district of Red Light and other areas in the municipality.

LIBERIA: Slipway residents decry poor sanitary condition

Residents of Slipway Community in Montserrado County have decried the poor sanitary condition of their community because of the lack of functional public toilets. Slipway community is situated in central Monrovia, near the Mesurado river and the historic Providence Island, and that most of the residents are low income earners or jobless. Slipway, with a population of over 25,000 inhabitants, often suffer the effects of a poor drainage system, flooding, garbage pollution and open defecation.

LIBERIA: Living Water Int’l declares 12 communities Open Defecation Free

Twelve Communities in Kakata District, Margibi County have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the Christian Faith based charity, Living Water International. Under the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Initiative, 15 communities were selected by the charity for the process, but only 12 of the fifteen were successful to receive the ODF status.

LIBERIA: WASH Legislative Advocacy Group launched

As all efforts continue aimed at creating an enabling environment for water, sanitation and hygiene by civil society actors and international partners, the campaign of improving WASH has received another boost. A Legislative group with focus on advocating for the WASH sector to receive funding and place under a centralized authority has been launched.
