Liberia has joined the rest of the world in observance of World Water Day 2017, which is annually celebrated March 22.
The global theme of this year’s celebration is “waste water“ with the campaign theme: "Why waste water?"
The official celebration started with a parade from the Monrovia City Hall to the William V.S. Tubman High School in Sinkor for the indoor program which brought together WASH actors from government, development partners and civil society.

‘Wild Water: The State of the World’s Water’ briefing released to mark World Water Day 2017 - To mark World Water Day, on 22 March WaterAid Liberia is calling for urgent action from the international community and the government to reach the 847,000 rural people in Liberia without access to clean water.
WaterAid’s annual analysis of global water access, Wild Water: The State of the World’s Water, released ahead of World Water Day on 22 March, examines the vulnerability of rural communities around the world to extreme weather events resulting from climate change – including cyclones, ruinous flooding and prolonged drought.

Higher Ground International (HGI), a Providence-based nonprofit NGO working in the rural communities of Liberia, West Africa celebrates the one-year anniversary of its new stateside headquarters and resource center, the Rukiya Center on the South Side of Providence, Rhode Island. The Rukiya Center is the only full service resource center of its kind that is dedicated to providing more robust culturally relevant programming and services for members of the Liberian and African diaspora living in Providence. The organization work has become well known in Rhode Island, gaining critical support from the community, elected officials and partnerships from large non-profit organizations, such as Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, Lifespan, United Way of RI to name a few.

A local NGO, SHALON Incorporated has released findings on a survey conducted at some health facilities in Montserrado County. Five of the seven facilities accessed have infectious Committee, while there are no terms of reference, according to SHALON.
Contrary to health policy, five of the health centers do not have mortuary.
The report with support from WaterAid Liberia and Sierra Leone, also indicated that WASH facilities are available at the health centers, but lack pipe borne water system.

It appears that there’s still a need for more and robust awareness to avoid using drainages as dumpsite in Monrovia and its environs.
A case in point is the biggest drainage located in the Soniwein Community in Monrovia. Some residents in the community are persistently using the drainage as dumpsite.
A team of WASH Reporters visited the Soniwein Community to find out how the drainage in the area is posing serious health hazard to community dwellers there, since it was cleaned last year under the initiative of former Monrovia City Mayor, Mary Broh based on several reportage by the WASH Media Network.
