Leaders from Liberia and Guinea recently met to discuss Ebola surveillance across their shared border. Bong County Superintendent, Selena P. Mappy and Yomou Prefecture Prefect Mustapha Forowe Conole presided over the meeting, which included Paramount Chiefs, County Health Officers and Team Members, Joint Security representatives, community leaders and NGO representatives.

LIBERIA: Garbage causes flood in Monrovia

Improper garbage disposal by residents, meanly those engaged in swamp land development is said to have contributed to a wave of flooding in recent days leaving thousands of dwellers homeless in Liberia’s Capital, Monrovia. Six hours of heavy down pour of rain on the first day of June followed by subsequent down pours on the second day of the new month in Monrovia triggered the wave of flooding.

Liberian Civil Society Cautions Women: Land Rights are also Women Rights

The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) is calling on Liberian women to develop keen interest in identifying their rights to land ownership in Liberia because Land Rights issues are also women rights. OSIWA’s Country Officer, Massa Crayton said: “Now is the time to let you know from communities to communities that the issues of Land Rights are also women rights because women are one of the proper owner of the land”.

Fourteen Community Daycare Centers face imminent closures in New York

If New York City Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo has her way, 14 Community Day Care Centers slated for closure will not happen. Council Member Cumbo representing Brooklyn’s District 35, elected officials, parents, children and staff of 8 daycare providers rallied Thursday at the Steps of City Hall to persuade New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) to save the fourteen-daycare centers from impending closure.
