Malawi expects another good harvest in 2011

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Good rains received in southern and central areas of Malawi for the 2010/11 agricultural season and the availability of Farm Input Subsidy Programme, which benefited an estimated 1.6 million smallholder maize farmers, has raised prospects of another good harvest in the country. Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP) provides farmers with access to inputs at a subsidized price. Malawi appoints first female head prosecutor

By Emmanuel Muwamba – Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has appointed Chief State Advocate Rosemary Kanyuka as new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) becoming the first female to head the prosecution team in Malawi. Her appointment makes it the third DPP in the Mutharika administration since 2004. Solicitor General Anthony Kamanga told the press that Kanyuka has been appointed to head the State prosecution team but she will wait for the confirmation by Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament. Malawi vice president Joyce Banda fired from ruling party

Emmanuel Muwamba – President Bingu wa Mutharika has fired two senior party members-Vice President Joyce Banda and former minister Khumbo Kachali from the  ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Banda and Kachali were first and second party deputy president presidents respectively. Mutharika who is also president of the party fired the two at a meeting of DPP National Governing Council (NGC) on Saturday. The meeting lasted about four hours. The party asked Banda and Kachali to defend themselves “briefly”. Southern Africa: Denied funding puts HIV patients at risk of death

Several low-income countries highly affected by HIV risk being entirely or partly disqualified from the current funding round by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, warns the international medical humanitarian organisation Médecins sans Frontières (MSF). Unless a new round of funding is urgently introduced to allow rejected applications to be resubmitted, HIV-positive people will suffer severe consequences such as debilitating opportunistic infections and ultimately early death.
