On Monday, February 5th to 10th 2018, Sierra Leone Women are Free to Choose (SLWAFC), a community based organization in Freetown and The National Sowie Council inaugurated its first Female Circumcision Awareness Week.
This weeklong, first in history event - coincides with the 15th International Day of Zero Tolerance on Tuesday, February 6, a UN sponsored day of awareness for the eradication of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Female Genital Cutting (FGC) that proponents say is discrimination and absolute violation of the human rights of women and girls - will bring together the masses of affected women who will speak boldly about the World Health Organization’s FGM/FGC categorizations, exaggerated claims of harm as well as one-sided media representations of FGM in Sierra Leone and globally.

After a stint in Europe, Sierra Leonean singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist Azania returns home to headline Sierra Leone National Storytelling Festival.
The two day festival from Friday, December 29 – Saturday, December 30 showcasing storytelling competition between Freetown secondary schools students, drumming, comedy and a talent exhibition is expected to draw thousands of Sierra Leoneans, tourists and storytelling enthusiasts to the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown.
“I’m very honored and excited to perform in the National Storytelling Festival,” Azania said in a statement via social media.

Sierra Leone’s 709 carat “Peace Diamond”, the 14th largest diamond in the world is set to go on the auction block on December 4 in New York City.
The announcement of the auction made by Martin Rapaport, Chairman of the Rapaport Group at a press conference Tuesday in New York City ends widespread speculations by Sierra Leoneans that the diamond was secretly sold by the government of Sierra Leone.

As part of World Toilet Day celebration 2017 under the theme: "Waste Water", the government of Liberia, Donor partners, Civil Society and students gathered in the Capital of Montserrado County, Bentol to commemorate the Day.
The program commenced with a grand parade in the principal streets of Bentol with development partners, Civil Society and Government joining students to demonstrate the importance of the Day.
Providing an overview of World Toilet Day, Amos Gborie of the Ministry of Health said the Day was set aside by the United Nations and other partners to highlight the difficulties billions of people experience due to the lack of toilet facilities.

Former vice president of Sierra Leone Alhaji Samuel Sidique Sam Sumana will know his fate when the ECOWAS Court reconvenes in Abuja, Nigeria for a hearing on his $210 million lawsuit challenging the Government of Sierra Leone for what he calls his “unconstitutional” removal from office.
“The case is set for judgment on 22 November, 2017 for Violation of the plaintiff [Mr. Sumana’s] human rights,” said Mr. Felicien Hounkanrin, ECOWAS Court Information Officer confirming the hearing from his office in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mr. Sumana’s case ECW/CCJ/APP/38/16 will be heard by a three-man panel led by Justice Hameye Foune Mahal-madane, Justice Friday Chijioke Nwoke and Alioune Sall.
