Zimbabwe: In Brief: Donors pledge support for Zimbabwe’s poorest in 2011

Johannesburg, 27 December 2010 (IRIN) – An informal group of developed countries has pledged to continue to back programmes in Zimbabwe worth more than US$500 million in 2011 to help the poor, but says “serious concerns remain” on the “protection of fundamental rights, the rule of law, governance and respect for agreements”. President Robert Mugabe is expected to announce a date for national elections in 2011, according to local media, but NGOs and human rights activists fear they could lead to a surge of political violence. Zimbabwe: Research shows higher rape cases than previous elections

By Misheck Rusere – A research carried by two Non Governmental Organisations namely the Research and Advocacy Unit and Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights has revealed that the country’s 2008 elections resulted in the highest number of rapes compared to other elections since 2000. Southern Africa: Denied funding puts HIV patients at risk of death

Several low-income countries highly affected by HIV risk being entirely or partly disqualified from the current funding round by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, warns the international medical humanitarian organisation Médecins sans Frontières (MSF). Unless a new round of funding is urgently introduced to allow rejected applications to be resubmitted, HIV-positive people will suffer severe consequences such as debilitating opportunistic infections and ultimately early death. Zim Ragga DJ Jah Seed Bashes South African Woman Reveller

Shout-Africa/ Sunday World – Nut-witted Zimbabwean-born ragga disk jockey, Jah Seed whose real name is Adrian Anesu Mupemhi, doesn’t take kindly to socialising with gays, the Sunday World reported yesterday. The highly pompous ragga and dancehall artist is reported to have allegedly bashed a woman who was with a gay friend at the Bassline in Newtown, downtown Johannesburg, last week–because they were becoming too friendly for his liking.
