SADC Supports Tanzania’s Power Dam Project

By Staff Reporter, Dar es Salaam – The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) a regional bloc of 16 countries has formally endorsed the hydro power dam in Tanzania that seeks to develop 2,115 megawatts of electricity.

The dam that has been criticised by some Western countries will be Africa’s fourth largest in terms of power outputs and will be completed in three years through Tanzania’s own taxpayer’s money.

Dr. MagufuliSpeaking during the launch of the 4th SADC Industrialization Week, the Executive Secretary Dr. Stergomena Tax applauded the initiative saying it will benefit other SADC countries that face acute power shortage.

“We commend the efforts of President Magufuli to increase supply of affordable energy through the 2,115 Rufiji Hydro Project that will translate to lower costs of production and contribute, not only in Tanzania but also the SADC region.”

Tanzania is hosting the 39th SADC Summit that is preceded by the Industrial Week will be attended by other 15 member states. President Magufuli will also assume the SADC chairmanship for a year from this August, 2019.

Speaking in the event, President Magufuli affirmed his support for the region’s industrialization policy insisting that Africa must focus on industrialization and intra-region trade.
